Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS): India’s Space Ambition

By Om Patil · On July 24, 2025

The Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) is India’s first-ever space station project, led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This ambitious venture symbolizes India’s growing capabilities in space exploration, marking a significant leap forward in science and technology.

What is the Bharatiya Antariksh Station?

The BAS is a modular space station designed to support scientific research in areas such as life sciences, medicine, and advanced space exploration. It will provide a platform for Indian astronauts to conduct experiments and gain valuable experience in long-term space missions.

Fun Fact: BAS will be part of the expanded Gaganyaan program, India’s first human spaceflight mission!

Budget and Timeline

  • Budget: The project is allocated a total of ₹20,193 crore. This includes developing critical technologies and precursor missions for BAS.
  • First Module Launch: The initial module, known as the Base Module, will launch in 2028. This step will test technologies for long-term human space habitation.
  • Full Completion: BAS is expected to be fully operational by 2035. Its phased development approach will ensure efficiency and allow for upgrades as technology advances.

How Many Astronauts Will BAS Host?

The station will initially accommodate three astronauts for short-term missions. Over time, ISRO plans to expand the station's capacity to host six astronauts, enabling longer missions and more extensive research. These upgrades will include new modules and advanced life-support systems.

Did You Know? The phased development of BAS allows ISRO to refine its systems and learn from early deployment challenges, ensuring long-term success!

What Does BAS Mean for India?

The Bharatiya Antariksh Station is more than just a scientific endeavor. It represents India’s vision to become a global leader in space exploration. By completing this project, India will join an elite group of nations capable of operating independent space stations. BAS will also inspire advancements in technology, foster international collaboration, and pave the way for future deep-space missions.

With the successful implementation of BAS, India is poised to make a lasting mark in the world of space exploration.
